Taschen Books has two priorities – To produce fantastic and innovative books and to sell them at fair prices all over the world. They don’t follow any trends, they create them.” The history of Taschen Books began in 1980 in Cologne, Germany; when Benedikt Taschen founded the small shop TASCHEN COMICS, where he wanted to sell comic books. Soon, the first catalogues were printed and new employees were hired. In 1984, when the company was close to bankruptcy, Benedikt Taschen lent some money and bought 40,000 remaining copies of an English illustrated book on Magritte, of which he sold every single one. He soon bought more rights and sold more books. The publishing house quickly filled the market niche for high-quality but affordable books and is still very successful in this area today. By now, Taschen Books offers numerous illustrated books and series on different topics such as design, art, photography and erotic images. The comic book shop developed into an international company with affiliates and shops all around the world.
